Electric Vehicle Number Plates UK: What Is Different?

Quick Answer

Electric vehicles in the UK can display an optional green flash on the left side of the plate to identify them as zero-emission vehicles. All other plate rules still apply: BS AU 145e standard, Charles Wright 2001 font, correct spacing, and a DVLA-registered supplier.

Electric vehicles in the UK can display an optional green flash on the left-hand edge of both number plates to indicate zero-emission status. This is the only significant difference between EV number plates and plates on petrol or diesel vehicles. All other rules remain identical: BS AU 145e still applies, the font must still be Charles Wright 2001, and plates must still come from a DVLA-registered supplier.

This guide covers everything EV drivers need to know about number plates in 2026.

The Green Flash: What It Is and What It Is Not

The green flash is a vertical green stripe running along the left-hand edge of a number plate. It was introduced in 2020 to allow zero-emission vehicle owners to indicate their EV status visually. It is entirely optional. You do not have to display a green flash on an electric vehicle. There is no penalty for not having one and no benefit in law to displaying one.

The green flash is permitted on both the front (white background) plate and the rear (yellow background) plate. It may only appear on the left-hand edge of the plate, in the area where the national identifier or flag is typically shown.

What Vehicles Can Display a Green Flash?

Only zero-emission vehicles are permitted to display the green flash. This currently means:

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), mild hybrids, and self-charging hybrids are not zero-emission and are not permitted to display a green flash. Displaying a green flash on a non-zero-emission vehicle is illegal.

Do Green Plates Change the Legal Requirements?

No. The green flash is a visual identifier only. Every plate on an electric vehicle must still:

  • Meet BS AU 145e
  • Use Charles Wright 2001 font at correct character dimensions
  • Use correct legal spacing (11mm between characters, 33mm between groups)
  • Have a white reflective front background and yellow reflective rear background
  • Come from a DVLA-registered supplier
  • Carry the supplier identification marking on the reverse

An EV plate that does not meet BS AU 145e is just as illegal as a non-compliant plate on a petrol car. The green flash does not grant any exemption from the standard.

Can I Put a Green Flash on My Existing Plates?

You cannot add a green flash to plates that were manufactured without one. Number plates must not be modified after manufacture. If you want green flash plates, you need to order new plates with the green flash included from a DVLA-registered supplier.

EV Plate Styles Available

EV drivers can choose from the same plate styles as any other driver. At Car Plates Pro, standard printed plates, 3D Gel, 4D Laser-Cut, and 4D Gel plates are all available. Green flash options can be specified when building your plates using the number plate builder.

Prices start from £6.99 for a standard plate, from £9.99 for 3D Gel, from £9.99 for 4D Laser-Cut (£18 per pair), and from £13.99 for 4D Gel (£23 per pair).

What About Older EV Registrations?

The green flash was introduced in 2020. If your electric vehicle was registered before then, your current plates were almost certainly made without a green flash. You are not required to retrofit them. If you want green flash plates, simply order new plates that include the flash. Your registration and entitlement remain the same.

Replacing EV Plates

The process for ordering replacement plates for an electric vehicle is the same as for any other vehicle. You will need proof of identity and your V5C logbook. Order before 2PM for same-day dispatch, with next working day delivery to 98% of UK addresses.
