Our 3D Gel number plates are the popular middle-ground upgrade. Flat reflective base, with domed polyurethane gel characters bonded over the top - giving you a glossy, slightly raised look without the full 3mm depth of a 4D laser-cut plate. What makes 3D Gel different from 4D
3D Gel and 4D plates both use raised characters, but the manufacturing differs:
- 3D Gel – flat printed character on the reflective base, then a clear domed polyurethane resin is poured on top, self-levelling into a glossy raised dome before curing.
- 4D Laser-Cut – solid 3mm acrylic character physically bonded to the base, like a thick raised letter.
- 4D Gel – the 4D laser-cut base, with a 3D Gel coating poured on top. Maximum depth plus showroom shine.
3D Gel is shallower than 4D (about 1.5mm raised vs 3mm), but visually striking - the dome catches light beautifully on a clean car.

How our 3D Gel plates are made
Each plate starts as a 5mm reflective acrylic base - white at the front, yellow at the rear, the only colours legal under BS AU 145e. The registration is printed in solid black using the mandatory Charles Wright 2001 font.
A clear polyurethane gel is then dispensed over each character. The resin self-levels into a domed shape, then cures under UV light into a hard, scratch-resistant glossy finish. The gel is UV-stabilised so it won’t yellow.
Before the plate ships, we permanently mark the back with our DVLA-registered postcode, BS AU 145e certification number, and manufacture date.

How long do 3D Gel plates last?
In normal UK use, 3D Gel plates last the life of the vehicle. The gel is UV-stabilised and scratch-resistant; the reflective base is automotive-grade.
Can I clean 3D Gel plates with a pressure washer?
Yes - light pressure from 30cm or further is fine. For everyday cleaning, warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth keeps them looking new.

What is the difference between 3D and 4D number plates?
On 3D gel plates the characters are raised gel resin bonded to the plate surface. On 4D laser-cut plates the characters are solid acrylic cut by CNC machine, standing even higher with sharper edges. Both are road legal.
