Quick Answer
4D laser-cut plates have bold, flat-top acrylic characters bonded to the plate backing. 4D Gel adds a polyurethane dome over those characters for extra gloss and depth. Both are fully road-legal. 4D starts from £9.99 per plate; 4D Gel from £13.99.
Both 4D laser-cut and 4D Gel plates are fully road legal, both use the same 3mm raised characters, and both pass MOT every time. The difference is the finish — and that’s what should drive your choice. Here’s how to think about it.
The 60-second answer
Pick 4D laser-cut if you want the bold raised character look at the best price, you drive your car daily, and you want a plate that hides road grime and minor scratches well. From £9.99 single, £18 pair.
Pick 4D Gel if you want maximum visual impact, you wash your car often, and you don’t mind paying a bit more for a finish that genuinely turns heads. From £13.99 single, £23 pair.
How they’re actually made
4D laser-cut
Solid black acrylic letters and digits are CNC laser-cut to micron accuracy from a 3mm sheet. Each character is then bonded individually to a 5mm reflective acrylic base — white at the front, yellow at the rear — using a high-strength permanent adhesive. The result: 3mm of raised character depth with a clean matte finish.
4D Gel
Starts identically — same 3mm CNC-cut raised characters on the same 5mm reflective base. Then we add a domed polyurethane gel coat over the top of each character. The gel is UV-stabilised, scratch-resistant and self-levels into a perfect dome before curing. Same 3mm raised depth as 4D laser-cut, plus a high-gloss finish that catches light.

Which suits your driving?
Daily-driven car: 4D laser-cut wins
If your car lives outside, sees motorway miles, gets washed every couple of weeks rather than every Saturday, the matte 4D laser-cut finish is forgiving. Road salt, light scratches and dirt sit less visibly on a matte surface. The plate still looks bold and modern, just doesn’t demand to be cleaned constantly.
Show car or weekend car: 4D Gel wins
On a clean car under decent light, 4D Gel is genuinely striking. The gloss finish works with paintwork, photographs beautifully, and reads as a premium upgrade rather than just a plate replacement. If you put time into your car, this is the plate that matches.
Performance car or modern EV: either works
Both styles complement modern car design. The matte of 4D laser-cut suits stealth builds (black wheels, dark trim, performance variants). The gloss of 4D Gel suits showroom-spec aesthetics — think anything with painted brake calipers or polished alloys.
Durability — the honest version
Both plates use the same 5mm acrylic base, which is impact-resistant and weatherproof. Both are UV-stabilised so the white/yellow reflective backgrounds won’t yellow over time. Where they differ:
- 4D laser-cut: characters are pure acrylic. They’re tough, but a hard direct impact (a stone chip from the motorway, for instance) can chip an edge.
- 4D Gel: the gel coat is a softer polyurethane. It absorbs minor impacts better than bare acrylic and “self-heals” small surface scuffs over a few warm days as the gel relaxes back into shape. Larger impacts can split the gel coat and reveal the acrylic underneath.
In normal UK use, both should last the life of the car. We see customer cars running 4D plates from 2020 with no issues.
Cleaning
Both clean the same way: warm soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth. Don’t use solvents, alcohol-based cleaners, or pressure washers held closer than 30cm — these can lift the bond between characters and base on cheaper 4D plates (ours use industrial-grade adhesive, but the principle holds).
The matte 4D laser-cut finish is more forgiving day-to-day. The 4D Gel finish shows water spots more readily but cleans back to mirror gloss quickly.

Still not sure?
If your priority is value and a clean modern look — go 4D laser-cut. If your priority is impact and you’ll keep the car clean — go 4D Gel. There’s no wrong answer; both will outlast the typical UK ownership cycle and both make stock plates look dated by comparison.

Important note on show plates
Show plates are designed for display, photography, and off-road or motorsport use only. They must never be fitted to a vehicle being driven on public roads. Any plate on a road-driven vehicle must be BS AU 145e certified, use Charles Wright 2001 font, correct legal spacing, and be supplied by a DVLA-registered supplier. All Car Plates Pro road-legal plates meet this standard.
